Could this be a turning point in the war? In the cyber age, any assault on a nation's internet infrastructure can send it back into last century - a blow which could be crippling especially in a shooting war with Russia.

Last Thursday, Vladimir Putin launched an assault on neighboring Ukraine, a deadly move which President Biden could have easily deterred with heavily placed sanctions eight months ago. Thursday's assault led to an international outcry with world leaders condemning the action in a way that could hopefully stop Putin without starting a world war.

Ukraine has been effectively left to defend itself.

The former KGB leader's (Putin's) attacks on the former satellite state (Ukraine) include virtual - not just traditional warfare. According to Internet monitor organization, Netblocks,

Network data from NetBlocks confirm a series of significant disruptions to internet service in Ukraine from Thursday 24 February 2022. Disruptions have subsequently been tracked across much of Ukraine including capital city Kyiv as Russia’s military operation progresses.

Ukraine's deputy prime minister, pleaded over Twitter for Musk to save them with Starlink satellite services.

In response, Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, urged Elon Musk to provide Internet services to the nation in crisis with his state-of-the-art satellite system: Starlink. Business Standard reports the interchange which took place over Twitter.

While you try to colonize Mars -- Russia try to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets successfully land from space -- Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people! We ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations

10 hours later, Musk replied with a tweet of his own: "Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals en route."

Editorial Note

I personally like to compare Musk to a captain of industry of old, what American Marxists like to frame today as "robber barons" - or "men who were against community." However, without their pioneering, risk-taking, and massive expenditure of wealth, the world would be a lot less industrialized than it is.

Musk is a risk-taker who is for community and is so not just implicitly (via the creative destruction of an innovative idea) but explicitly by intentionally directing resources towards humanitarian and liberty-oriented causes.
