BLUF

The African Union (AU) has suspended four of its member states—Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Sudan—due to an “unprecedented number” of military coups that have occurred in each nation spanning a period from April 2019 to January 2022. To date, the AU has held a series of meetings and summits addressing reunification means concerning each of the expelled member nations. Restoration of “constitutional order” remains a common theme of mandates placed upon each of the transitional governments.

ANALYSIS

Though the AU also functions as a military alliance, it has primarily utilized diplomatic measures to address each of the usurped governments. On 3 July 2022, the Western bloc of African states, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), released a set of economic sanctions that were previously placed upon Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali, demonstrating regional measures to accept and reintegrate the three transitional governments into the African economy. The AU may consider ECOWAS’ actions in future reintegration negotiations. As of June 2022, Sudan’s AU membership remains suspended due to a "lack of progress towards the establishment of a civilian-led Transitional Authority."
